Add a touch of charm to your backyard flock with our Silkie chickens. Fluffy, gentle, and five-toed. These docile birds are one of the best pet chicken breeds around and perfect for families and small-scale backyard setups. 

We breed backyard quality Silkies here on our Southern Highlands farm, raised on our own feed and settled on solid ground before they ever leave us. Well-started birds are available periodically throughout the year, from day-old chicks through to well-grown coop-ready pullets.

Silkies aren't kept for eggs. They're kept for everything else. Fur-like feathers that lack the barbs of a normal feather. An extra toe on each foot. A temperament calm enough for a toddler to hold. It's easy to see why they've become one of the most popular pet chicken breeds in Australia, especially for families and first-time keepers.

They're not big layers, producing around 100 to 120 small cream or tinted eggs a year, but they make up for it with famously strong mothering instincts. A broody Silkie hen will readily sit on and raise eggs from other breeds, not just her own.

A few things worth knowing before you bring one home: Silkie feathers aren't waterproof, so they need dry, sheltered housing, and they don't cope well with an Australian summer without shade. They're gentle enough to be bullied by pushier breeds, so they do best alongside similarly calm birds or kept as their own flock.

Available stages: Day-old unsexed chicks, 8 to 16 week old pullets, and 16+ week old pullets. Roosters and cockerels available occassionally or upon request. We don't sell eggs of any kind.
