A classic dual-purpose breed for backyard flocks, reliable, striking, and full of personality. The Light Sussex is one of the best all-round backyard chicken breeds you can keep.
We breed backyard quality Light Sussex here on our Southern Highlands, NSW farm, raised on our own feed with plenty of space and sunlight so they're strong, healthy, and well-socialised before they join your coop. Well-started birds are available periodically throughout the year, from 8 week old juvenile pullets through to point of lay.
Hens are calm and curious, laying around 200 to 250 pale brown eggs a year with a consistent output and a long productive lifespan. They get along well with children and other animals, which makes them a solid choice for families and beginner keepers.
They have a classic white plumage with bold black markings around the neck and tail, and a proud, upright stance.
Available stages: 8 to 12 weeks, 12 to 20 weeks, approaching point of lay and cockerels. See current pricing for details.
This is our backyard quality range. If you're after show-quality bloodlines bred to the Australian Poultry Standards, see our exhibition Standard Light Sussex birds.
Local pickup is from our designated meet point in Bargo, NSW, or we can work with your chosen transport company to arrange delivery Australia-wide.
Disclaimer: All birds are sold in a healthy state at the time of handover. Once the birds are transferred to the buyer, The Poodle and The Hen takes no responsibility for any injuries, illnesses, or deaths that may occur. My 3 girls are starting to grow up nicely, they are very pretty hens. The love their dust bath and are starting to come to me when I make a clucking noise as they know I have their meal worm treats.
Beautiful natured girls.
